With a population of just over 11,000 people, Edgewood, WA is a quiet little town in a string of cities that includes Tacoma, Puyallup, Milton, and Auburn. The shortest drive from Edgewood to Seattle is 34 minutes, making it a perfect place for commuters to settle and get away from the bustle and traffic of the Emerald City.

One of the main attractions at Edgewood are its lovely parks: 5 in all, each with their own set of sports fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and walking trails.

What’s Special About Edgewood?

If you’re going to visit or live in Edgewood, you need more to attract you here than just great parks (although they’re enticing enough on their own). Fortunately, there are several reasons why Edgewood is a special place to call home.

1. The Nyholm Windmill

Let’s start with what makes Edgewood unique: the Nyholm Windmill. This structure was originally set up on a prominent ranch owned by a family called Nyholm. The Edgewood Fire Department eventually moved it to the city, where it has become a local landmark and a primary element of the city’s official logo. It’s a piece of historical significance and a symbol of the town’s resiliency and pride.

2. The Community Events

Edgewood possesses an admirable sense of community, and it’s shown through the events they hold every year. Adults and children alike can volunteer for and benefit from events such as the Back to School Festival, the Annual Benefit Auction, Senior Exercise, and Kids PowerPack Teams.

3. The Library

The Milton/Edgewood Library is shared by Edgewood and Milton, although it is located in the latter city (a mere 5-minute drive away). It received a brand-new location as recently as 2011, meaning it comes with modern fixtures and features. Edgewood residents of all ages love to come here and participate in seasonal as well as monthly reading programs.

4. The Safety

Edgewood is considered number 34 out of 75 Washington cities in Safewise’s 2021 safety ranking. They examine crime rates, the number of violent crimes, and the number of property crimes committed in each city to determine its safety level.

5. The Parks

Last but not least, of course, the parks of Edgewood are beautiful and sprawling, with lots to entertain around every corner. Among the treasures you’ll find are a community garden, local wildlife, and well-maintained, paved paths surrounded by a forest of trees.

Best Parks In Edgewood

1. Crawford Woods

Crawford Woods is unique to Edgewood because it is currently more of a nature preserve than a park. The land for it was donated in 2008 by long-time resident J. Jeane Heine. Eventually, the city plans to add walking paths and benches, so that people can enjoy walking in the woods and observing the plant and animal life from a safe distance.

2. Edgemont Park

Edgemont Park is a wonderful place for children and adults to play. It comes with lots of trees, a playground (as well as a separate area for toddler-age kids), a combination baseball and soccer field, and picnic shelters so you can enjoy a meal outside. There are even restrooms on site, so you could spend several hours taking advantage of this large 5-acre space.

3. Interurban Trail

Interurban Trail is a path that, when completed, will allow you to walk or bike from Tacoma to Everett. The total time it will take you to finish the walk is 20 hours – almost an entire day! Edgewood is one of many towns that is home to a section of this path, which was originally an old railway track that connected the Puget Sound Electric Railway Seattle to the Tacoma Interurban. If you love walking, running, or cycling, this is definitely the trail for you.

4. Nelson Farm Park

Have a green thumb but nowhere to plant your favorite flowers, herbs, fruits, and veggies? Take your seeds to Nelson Farm Park, where you can tend them and watch them grow in the community garden. The best part is it’s free (although donations are encouraged to keep the garden thriving). All you have to do to get started is fill out an application, and keep to their standards for composting and not using synthetic pesticides. This is a great place to take your family or even spend some alone time with sunshine and the sweet scents of plants and soil.

5. Nelson Nature Park

Nelson Nature Park is Edgewood’s most nature-oriented park that you can still walk through. The winding, 0.5-mile long walking trail will take you through gorgeous woods, where you can watch small animals and birds go about their business from the vantage point of benches or bridges. You can retreat from the chaos of your everyday life here, and walk your dog, meditate, journal, draw, or whatever quiet activity you like.
