WA
Tacoma
Tacoma is a mid-sized urban port city in the county seat of Pierce County, Washington. The city is on Washington's Puget Sound, 32 miles southwest of Seattle, 31 miles northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. The population was just under 220,000 in 2021. Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third largest in the state. Tacoma also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region, which has a population of around 1 million. Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Takhoma or Tahoma. It is locally known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay.
Top 8 Reasons Why You Should Move To Tacoma WA
Tacoma, WA is a gem of a city that, while not as large as its near neighbor Seattle, is actually just as desirable a location to live in as the latter city, if not more. After all, its population is smaller, it’s easier and quicker to get from point A to point B, and yet you sacrifice none of the commerce, culture, and charm of the rest of Washington state. It’s the perfect blend of small town vibes and big city chops to make your home.
Below are the top 8 reasons why you should move to Tacoma, WA, also known as the City of Destiny
1. The Weather Is Beautiful (And Cool) Year Round
If balmy weather is what you love, then Tacoma is the place for you. You can expect lovely, cool temperatures all year round - even in the summer! The average high during the summer months are in the upper 70s, meaning you can fully enjoy the city and explore nearby state parks getting too warm.
2. The Views Are Immaculate
You may have heard of Mount Rainier and how it’s one of the tallest mountains in the United States. But how would you like to see it for yourself? From Tacoma, you can! This majestic mountain rises 14,411 ft into the air, and is located just around 60 miles from the city. You can’t miss the incomparable view of its glorious, snow laden peak in the distance. But if that’s not close enough, you can visit Mount Rainier National Park and bask in the uncommon beauty of Washington’s natural hills, streams, fields, and forests.
3. It’s Close To Seattle
Seattle - a trading and business epicenter and home to over 700,000 people (and the towering Space Needle) - is just a little over a 30-minute drive from Tacoma. Its proximity is a boon to commuters as well as anyone who wants to take advantage of the culture, historicity, parks, and shopping districts that Seattle has to offer.
The best part of living in Tacoma is you can visit the “big” city, and then go home the same day to enjoy the quiet and solace of what may be considered a burg in comparison.
4. It’s Got A Long And Rich History
History buffs will not be disappointed by Tacoma’s long history. For thousands of years, the area was inhabited by Native Americans. The city was incorporated in 1875, and it’s been thriving ever since. In total, you can visit 165 historical landmarks around Tacoma, as well as tour the Washington State Historical Society which shows exhibits of local history and supports historical research all around the state.
5. It’s Got A Fabulous Downtown Area

You can also tour two restored theaters from 1918 that recall the glory of the city’s vaudeville days.
6. Its Business Center Is Hopping

8. The Housing Market Is Thriving
In January 2021, Tacoma had the fastest selling housing market in the country. The area is more affordable than Seattle while still being within a relatively short drive from its big sister city.
To balance out the fast selling housing market and help people take advantage of the thriving economy, the city government is taking steps to create more affordable homes.
One recent initiative includes renovating the historic Hilltop neighborhood and making sure the properties are affordable for residents and BIPOC-owned businesses.
With these efforts and more to come, Tacoma is wonderful for up and coming individuals, families, and entrepreneurs. It’s a place to grow and rise to your full potential.
